Frequently Asked Questions for Unclaimed, Stale-Dated Checks:
What items are considered “stale-dated check”?
- A Check becomes Stale-dated when it is at least 6 months past the check’s issue date or can be declared lost, stolen, or destroyed by affidavit. The bottom part of the GDOE check indicates that “VOID 180 days after the date of issue.”
What type of Uncollected or Stale-dated Check GDOE has?
- A GDOE uncollected or Stale-dated check can comprise of vendor payments, reimbursement checks, and payroll checks, such as regular paychecks, merit bonus checks, and our final paycheck.
- If this is a payroll-related final paycheck, exit clearance may need to be submitted first prior to the release.
A check I am due was lost/stolen/destroyed. If I am the payee, how can I get a reissue?
- If you are the payee, and the check has been lost, stolen, or destroyed you may request a reissue by completing a reissue package. Instructions and forms can be found at link: https://forms.gle/Kmqo98ixSzMDqF3H7
What if I have an original check that is past its stale date, but has not been cashed?
- If you are in possession of an original check more than 6 months past its issue date, please contact our offices to obtain a reissue of the check or an official GDOE memo to authorize the bank to honor the check.
Will the check be canceled if not claimed on a specific date?
- Following the 5 GCA § 21116 (d) Unclaimed or Unpaid Checks, The amounts of all checks or drafts which shall have been unclaimed or outstanding for more than three years from the date of the audit shall be paid into the Treasury as revenue of the General Fund. In this case, GDOE will reverse it and record it as other revenues of the general operating fund.
- While this is the first time GDOE posted the unclaimed or Stale-dated check publicly and posted it on the website, the three-year mark for the initial listing expires on August 14, 2026.
